As Women’s History Month comes to an end, The New York Women’s Foundation reflects on a month of celebrations, through art, dialogue, and community engagement, of the trailblazers who have paved the way for progress.

This March, The Foundation evaluated the first seven years of the NYC Fund for Girls and Young Women of Color (GYWOC), the first fund of its kind in the United States. On March 19, we gathered with The Ford Foundation for an in-person and virtual release of the findings from the first phase of The Fund and to welcome feedback from grantee partners and members of the funding table. Continuing its mission to create a city where all girls and young women of color have equal opportunities for economic and social success, the next phase of The Fund will focus on bolstering meaningful and holistic mental health support for young women and transgender and gender non-conforming youth of color.

On March 20th, members of our community gathered at the Shah Garg Foundation, alongside our partner Women of Culture, to explore the Making Their Mark exhibition: a curation of the works of over eighty artists from the Shah Garg Collection. With the inspiration and support of Susan Sawyers, the event was a vibrant celebration of art, resilience, and the power of collective action. We raise our glasses to the artists who continue to challenge the status quo, rewrite the narrative, and build a world where all women thrive.
On March 28, The Foundation’s Emerging Leaders Network (ELN) honored the next generation of leaders in a display of sisterhood, leadership, and collective giving. Together, we celebrated the evening’s honoree, ELN Co-Chair Casie Kowalski, and were joined by panelists Narae Yun, Rashidah Siddiqui, and Aleksandra Bookman, in an inspirational celebration of the young and powerful voices that educate, empower, and uplift our communities.

This month, we also celebrated the incredible dedication and support of our corporate partners in our Bring The Foundation to Work series, a collaborative effort by The Foundation and justice movement partners, through engaging “lunch and learn” events. By providing a network of corporate women leaders and grantee partners with a platform for vibrant conversations on workforce-related topics and equality, fostering diverse voices and perspectives, we are setting the stage for discussions on pressing issues and pragmatic actions for change.
The WOMEN @Saks Employee Resource Group partnered with The Foundation to host a panel centering the experiences and accomplishments of women in the workplace, with a focus on fostering an environment of equity, diversity, and inclusion. The Foundation joined Barbarian at their Women’s History Month Celebration for an inspirational afternoon of lunch, learning, and bouquet-making in celebration of their involvement in our mission. We are also grateful to MUFG for awarding The Foundation with a $5,000 grant to commemorate Women’s History Month, and we look forward to planning more opportunities to collaborate as we embark on our partnership.
As we close out Women’s History Month and honor the achievements and contributions of the women of our community, we recognize that our mission is far from over. At The New York Women’s Foundation, we are committed to amplifying unheard voices, advancing gender justice, and creating The History of Our Future.
In the spirit of this collective work, we are calling on you for one last push toward our fundraising goal. Join us in harnessing the power of Radical Generosity by donating to our Women’s History Month Campaign.
