The National Domestic Workers Alliance, grantee partner of The New York Women’s Foundation, united with fellow members of the Care Can’t Wait Coalition for the Rally for Care this past week. Adding to the excitement, President Joe Biden addressed the crowd, highlighting the importance of investments in the movement for care workers.
“After generations of isolation and invisibility, domestic workers, parents and family caregivers, care workers, people with disabilities and all of us who rely on care, who have been fighting for the care agenda — affordable child care and home care, paid leave and good jobs for care workers — we had a BIG moment in the sun…[It is] a testament to the growing power of our movement for care, to all of the incredible organizations in the Care Can’t Wait Action coalition and to all of you who are caregiving out loud. We are making care a national priority, and we are unstoppable.” — Ai-jen Poo, Executive Director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance.
Care giving is an issue that The Foundation has funded from the beginning.
In 2006, Ai-jen Poo, approached The Foundation with a plan to organize care workers across the U.S. to improve labor standards. While she faced funding challenges elsewhere, The Foundation funded the National Domestic Workers Alliance with $30,000. With help from that early support, the organization has grown to a nation-wide movement with more than 70 local affiliates and 250,000 members online.
The Foundation honored Ai-jen Poo with the Celebrating Women Award in 2012. To continue the tradition of celebrating strong leaders dedicated to justice, join us at the upcoming Celebrating Women Breakfast on May 8.
