The New York Women’s Foundation was proud to support Grantee Partner Hot Bread Kitchen earlier this week as they hosted Governor Hochul and her Administration’s announcement of a new statewide initiative to support asylum seekers. This announcement came in the wake of President Biden’s redesignation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for immigrants from Venezuela.
The Foundation congratulates Governor Hochul and her Administration for taking a bold step to address the migrant crisis in New York State that will connect individuals with employers in New York State looking for workers.
According to The New York State Department of Labor (DOL), this initiative will create more than 18,000 jobs supporting the integration of migrant families, the majority of whom are women and children, into the economy and the vibrant fabric of life in New York. We further commend the Governor for allocating $30 Million to help migrants to file the necessary legal forms to secure work authorization.
The New York Women’s Foundation’s longtime Grantee Partner, Hot Bread Kitchen, whom we first funded in its most nascent stage in 2010, was an ideal organization to spotlight. From the beginning, this women-led organization has responded to the need to create economic opportunities for low-income immigrant women and women of color who are able to hone their existing culinary skills to find job opportunities in the growing food and hospitality industry in NYC.

Immigrant women can obtain living wage jobs and financial independence with on-the-job training and a unique and comprehensive package of support necessary for a stable life, including help with English language proficiency, access to vocational and higher education, and childcare.
The New York Women’s Foundation President, Ana Oliveira said, “We hope that the positive impact of this initiative on achieving integration for migrant families while also solving the workforce gap will encourage President Biden to extend Temporary Protected Status to the other deserving asylum seekers and migrants in making America their new home.”
